Roadster

A roadster, also known as a spyder or spider, is a two-seater car, traditionally without a roof (or with a detachable roof) and no side or rear windows. Modern day two-seaters commonly have windows and feature retractable roofs (and are thus convertibles). While retractable soft-tops are still marketed as roadsters/spyders, retractable hard-tops are commonly designated as coupe roadsters.

Late 1930s-1950s early days

The term seems first to have appeared in the late 1930s in southern California, where people would race their modified cars on the vast, empty dry lake beds northeast of Los Angeles under the rules of the Southern California Timing Association. The activity increased in popularity after World War II, particularly in California, due to returning soldiers, many of whom had been given technical training in the service. The original hot rods were old cars (most often Fords, typically ModelTs, Model As 1928-31, 1932-34 Model Bs, or V-8s) that had been modified to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics. Typical modifications were removal of convertible tops, hood, bumpers, windshield, and/or fenders); lowering the chassis; and modifying the engine by turningWheels and tires were changed for improved traction and handling. "Hot Rod" was sometimes a term used in the 1950s as a derogatory term for any car that did not fit into the mainstream. Hot rodder's modifications were considered to improve the appearance as well, leading to show cars in the 1960s replicating these same modifications along with a distinctive paint job. and/or replacing with a more powerful type.

Old roadsters

Traditionally, roadster bodies were used on anything from a Ford Model T to a Cadillac V-16. They are popular with collectors, and are often valued higher than even other open styles.

Hot rod roadsters

The American hot rod is largely based on Ford roadsters and coupes. Late Model Ts and 1932 Fords are the most popular starting points.

Modern roadsters

The introduction of the Mazda MX-5 in 1989 is largely credited with the resurgence in the market for roadsters.

2009 Maserati Quattroporte

If you love the Maserati Quattroporte, these photos of the 2009 Maserati Quattroporte S should warm your heart. If you don't love the QP, we're sure with enough therapy you can turn things around. The Quattroporte S model gets a version the 4.7-Liter V8 out of the Gran Turismo S, detuned slightly to produce 425 HP. Obvious exterior changes include a slatted grille, revised front and rear lights and new mirrors. Because this car isn't for the mass affluent, the QP has been given two new shades of leather: Marrone Corniola and Sabbia. Press release below the jump; longing and credit checks sure to follow.

Maserati Quattroporte: A "Second" Masterpiece

The Maserati Quattroporte, a name that defined the category for the "Luxury Sports Sedan", in its current version can be considered something of a Maserati masterpiece. Five years of sales growth, 46 international awards and more than 15 000 cars delivered speak to its success as the flagship of Modena. A balanced blend of sporting capability and acclaimed design has defined the timeless attributes of cars bearing the Trident. For 2009 the Maserati Quattroporte is now being presented with a new look and new technical solutions.

The history of art is characterized by audacious artists who challenged pre-existing conventions and contributed seminal works. Some artists even challenged themselves by remodeling their own works and taking them to the next level. Leonardo Da Vinci produced a second version of his masterpiece known as "The Virgin of the Rocks". 400 years later, Matisse reinterpreted his original version of "Le Luxe". The results of both are essentially new works; although they are identical in size and very similar in composition to the originals; it is the new style that makes the second versions the most influential.

With some degree of similarity, Maserati is now realizing it's second "painting": the new Maserati Quattroporte.

Thanks to Pininfarina's unrivalled and skilful hand, the Maserati Quattroporte is being refined in a modern way, yet always mindful of the standards of purposeful line, elegance and exclusivity which characterize the style of the Maserati Quattroporte.

The personality and glamour of the Maserati flagship are now represented by two products: the Quattroporte and the Quattroporte S.

The former is fitted with the familiar 4.2 liter V8 engine, while the latter adopts the new 4.7 liter 425 Hp V8 recently introduced on the GranTurismo S, with a different tuning specification.

Both cars have the 6-speed automatic transmission developed in association with ZF.

Exterior styling changes include:

A newly design front fascia which adopts the traditional Maserati vertical slats, a design cue seen most recently on the Maserati GranTurismo.

The front and rear light units are also updated, featuring LEDs.

The under-door molding is defined with a line that runs into that of the new bumpers, which have a wider protective band and more pronounced rear styling.

Side-view mirrors are also new, with a dynamic shape and a more streamlined mounting.

The Interior of the Quattroporte, renown for a design clarity and sense of occasion has also seen many updates including an all new, state of the art Entertainment and Navigation system. Primary and secondary controls for both the passenger and driver have been refined in order to enhance ease of operation.

Two new shades of leather, Marrone Corniola and Sabbia, will replace the beige which was previously in the range, and debut on the Quattroporte S and Quattroporte respectively.

The new Quattroporte and Quattroporte S will be presented to potential prospects, customers and Maserati loyalists at events the world over beginning July, 2008. Deliveries are anticipated beginning in the fourth quarter of this year.

Geneva 2008: Alfa Romeo 159, Brera, Spider, GT

Alfa Romeo's headline news is the launch of its 8C Competizione Spider super-roadster in Geneva, but changes are coming to the 159 range as well.
The revised line-up will comprise 1.8 (140bhp) and 2.2-litre (185bhp) petrol engines, 120bhp and 150bhp versions of the 1.9 JTD diesel, the 200bhp 2.4 JTDm diesel and the petrol 3.2 V6 (260bhp).

The 3.2 V6 is available for the first time with front-wheel-drive, and features the Q2 electronic differential. This splits torque between the two front wheels according to driving conditions and road surfaces, optimising grip, traction, road-holding and stability during hard acceleration in low-grip conditions and when exiting corners.

The fitting of lighter alloy wheels and some aluminium suspension and brake components is said to have cut weight by some 45kg, and there's a general refresh inside: new titanium-coloured trim, new instruments and some new controls, plus three new paint colours and three new alloy wheel designs to choose from.

The Brera and Spider 3.2 V6 are now also available with front-wheel-drive (in combination with the six-speed manual gearbox). Like their 159 equivalent, they can be distinguished by their black upholstery and red detailing, and will feature lowered and modified suspension, low-profile tyres, and 'Q2' badging.

New to the GT range is the Blackline III, with a 170bhp version of the 1.9 JTDm diesel engine which is good for 0-60mph in 8.2 seconds. It will also include the Q2 electronic differential and goes on sale in July.

2008 Audi R8 Aftermarket Audio System - Comple Mentary

Outstanding cars don't always have the audio systems to match. Moise E. Hendeles learned this truth when he bought an '08 Audi R8. "After purchasing my Audi R8, I was extremely dissatisfied with the factory Bang & Olufssen upgrade audio system," he reveals. Even the car's sticker price of $140,000 isn't enough to overcome the limitations of a factory audio system. The disgruntled Hendeles stopped by Al & Ed's Autosound in West Hollywood, Calif., to see what could be done.
Meeting with installer Elie Rothstein, Hendeles learned about some solutions that would greatly improve upon the OEM sound system. Confident that Al and Ed's could meet his expectations, he gave Rothstein the go-ahead for the $10,000 install. After all, if you're spending $140K on a car, what's an extra 10 grand?

Subwoofer Enclosure And AMP RackEmbedded in the rear wall behind the seats, a subwoofer and amps add some powerful lows to the system. "The goal was to achieve a nice, tight bass response to complement the front speakers," Rothstein explains. "This was definitely achieved!" Flushed into the wall and hidden by the seats, you won't even know the Alpine amps and Pioneer subs are back there until you turn on the stereo. Carbon fiber by Sly Machines covers the custom enclosure, coordinating with the Audi's sleek aesthetic

AMPS

Two Alpine PDX amplifiers power the system. For the front Focals, a four-channel PDX-4.100 pumps out 400 watts of power. Handling the subwoofer, a two-channel PDX-2.150 brings 300 watts.Sub
A Pioneer TS-SW104D slim line subwoofer pumps the bass from Hendeles' favorite rock songs right into the occupants' midsections. The new upgrades by Al & Ed's Autosound blow the original audio system out of the water and Hendeles couldn't be happier. The OEM system may have let him down, but the aftermarket sound met his expectations and then some.

Dash
Part of Rothstein's plan was to retain the factory source unit by using a Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.2 processor as an integration device. "This is the best way to integrate with the factory system," Rothstein says. "The built-in time alignment and EQ features truly made this system sound amazing."

Shifter Knob
In keeping with the carbon fiber on the vehicle's exterior, Rothstein used Sly Machines carbon-fiber trim liberally in the cabin. In addition to framing the factory head unit, the material adds some lightweight flair to the doors, the sub enclosure/amp rack, and, of course, the trim around the shift
er.

Radar Detector
With a performer like the Audi R8, you know Hendeles can't possibly stick to the speed limit. The Passport radar detector helps keep traffic tickets to a minimum.

Doors
Keeping things simple, Rothstein disconnected the center channel and rear speakers. He then focused on the front only, mounting new speakers in the factory locations. A Focal K2 Power series three-way component set creates the soundstage. The 6.5-inch midbass and 4-inch woofer lodge in the doors, while the tweeter sits up in the sail panel.

Exterior

The '08 Audi R8 is gorgeous as is. Hendeles left the original body and wheels alone, making his only change in the engine compartment. There, he had the engine walls replaced with carbon fiber.

The HUMMER GT modified H2

Crazy European tuner Geiger cars has just unveiled its most hideous vehicle yet. The HUMMER GT is a modified H2 complete with gullwing doors, giant 30-inch wheels, and a 556hp (409kW) supercharged engine. The conversions include a custom light blue/orange paint job, engine upgrade with stainless steel exhaust and a specially calibrated ECU, lower suspension by about 100mm, and sport anti-sway bars for reduced tilt while fast cornering (we wonder whether that’s even possible). With these updates, the

HUMMER GT can hit 0-62mph in under 8s and has a max speed of 225km/h. Inside, you get carbon highlights, color-coded instruments and a multimedia system including a navigation system, DVD player, TV receiver and two LCD-screens that are integrated in the dashboard and a specially designed roof console. If you want the 30” wheels and special tyres you’ll need to cough up 28,000 Euros. A high performance brake kit with 380mm vented discs and 8-pot fixed calipers costs 10,268 Euros. This is on top of the
retail price starting from 133,900 Euros. More images

NISSAN GT R

LOS ANGELES (July 7, 2008) - Nissan North America, Inc. saved a few fireworks for the morning after the Independence Day holiday, delivering the first Nissan GT-R supercar in the United States at 12:01 a.m. PDT today to a Southern California customer.

The exotic, all-new 2009 Nissan GT-R, long coveted by American buyers who previously could experience the legendary GT-R only through electronic video games, officially goes on sale today at a select number of GT-R Certified Nissan dealers across the country. Daryl Alison of Costa Mesa, Calif., one of the first customers to order a new GT-R through a pre-sale program launched last January, couldn't wait for normal business hours to take possession of his new Black Obsidian GT-R Premium model. Through special arrangement with Universal City Nissan, Los Angeles, Alison was handed the keys by dealer representative Mike Sage moments after midnight.

"I've followed the history of the GT-R since inception and, after years of anticipation, it's great to see the 'Godzilla of supercars' finally coming to the U.S.," said Alison. "I've owned a number of Nissan 350Z sports cars and other exotics and muscle cars, but more than any other vehicle I can't wait to get this new GT-R out on the road. Now it's America's time to get in and play."

More than 1,700 of the exotic 480-horsepower Nissan GT-R supercars, or approximately 70 percent of the first year allocation for the United States market, have already been spoken for, with deliveries of those initial orders expected to continue throughout the coming months.

"It's a very exciting time for Nissan and auto enthusiasts who have waited a long time for the GT-R to become available in the U.S.," said Sage. "Demand for the GT-R has been overwhelming, with more people wanting them than cars available. We're pleased to deliver the very first GT-R to an enthusiast who will really appreciate its extraordinary performance abilities."

Joining the midnight delivery ceremony was Steve Millen, long-time Nissan race driver and the winningest driver in IMSA GT race series history. Millen recently participated in high-performance racetrack test sessions in the Nissan GT-R for a leading automotive enthusiast magazine and has assisted with GT-R dealer orientation and training programs.

The GT-R is available only through officially certified Nissan dealers that have met a number of strict sales, service and facilities commitments, including dedicating a master technician to GT-R service. A searchable listing of the GT-R Certified Nissan dealers is available to consumers on nissanusa.com. The 2009 Nissan GT-R has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)* of $69,850 for the GT-R and $71,900 for the GT-R Premium model.

The 2009 Nissan GT-R features a 3.8-liter twin turbo V6 producing 480 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, backed by an all-new, paddle-shifted, dual clutch sequential 6-speed rear transaxle. It features the use of a world's first independent rear transaxle ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system, which places the transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle, optimizing weight distribution and maximizing handling capability.

The Nissan GT-R's hybrid body construction combines steel, carbon fiber and die-cast aluminum and has a low coefficient of drag of 0.27, while achieving high front and rear downforce. GT-R's four-passenger cabin features a sloping "aero blade canopy" roofline and curved C-pillar "sword edge," as well as GT-R's hallmark four-ring taillights, functional rear carbon fiber underbody diffuser, rear spoiler and large, integrated quad exhaust tips. Inside, GT-R's interior includes sculpted performance bucket seats for an optimal driving position, a cockpit-style instrument panel with a large center-mounted tachometer and a multi-function display - which includes mechanical and driving information, as well as an on-board driving recorder.

A 2009 Nissan GT-R recently set a lap time of 7 minutes 29 seconds at the amed Nürburgring Nordschleife, one of the fastest times achieved by a production-spec vehicle to date, and has been timed in independent magazine tests at 0 - 60 miles per hour in under 3.5 seconds.

THE NEW FERRARI GT

MARANELLO, Italy — The official name of the ferrari gt was revealed on Tuesday, along with three photographs. The new Ferrari California, which will make its official debut at the 2008 Paris Auto Show, is undergoing a slow striptease that seems to be working to the advantage of the Prancing Horse brand. The reveal of the name of the GT comes on the heels of yesterday's word that Lamborghini will set up its U.S operation in Santa Monica, California. Apparently, the West Coast has become the darling of the Italian exotic marques. Ferrari bragged in a statement that "the ferrari california site has been up and running under theferrarigtcountdown name since last Friday and, purely on the strength of word of mouth between Ferrari fans on the Web, it attracted more than 60,000 hits from all over the world in just one weekend." Most of the visitors, the company noted, were from the U.S., followed by Italians. Enthusiasts got a peek at the car today via three photographs, showing front, rear and side views of the car. Ferrari says new photos of the cabin and other details will be posted in the coming weeks. Ferrari says the new model "will be available exclusively as a convertible with a folding hardtop. Both chassis and bodywork are aluminum, in line with the rest of the current range. The California will be powered by a new V8 engine mounted for the first time in the marque's history in the mid-front position." The California's 4.3-liter V8 features direct fuel injection and a "flat" crankshaft. It generates 460 horsepower at 7,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Ferrari California sprints from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.0 seconds. The California also gets the F1-Trac traction control system that debuted on the 599 GTB fiorano and a new multilink rear suspension system, as well as Brembo brakes with carbon-ceramic discs.

Lamborghini Embolado Concept Modification

The Lamborghini Embolado Concept is the work of Luca Serafini, an Italian student in the final year of the Industrial Design Course at the University of Parma, Italy. The name of the concept derives from a Spanish festival called named “Embolado Bull” or “Torro Embolado”.

The concept is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo and according to Luca’s declarations the car represents a tribute to the Superleggera : “After the recent launch of the Gallardo Superleggera, in order to make a tribute to it, I have adapted the Embolado Concept basing on the aestethic modifications of the new model, with some post-process in Photoshop.”

Aston Martin V8 Vantage

A hand-made vehicle, which combines traditional Aston Martin, or more concretely British style and features of everyday use. Neither performance potential and guts to be always on top should be omitted. These properties make this car world most wanted model. As a matter of fact, this car has been for a period of time James Bond’s loyal fellow.

Probably, it is not necessary to mention that cars of this “insular” car company can really pride with their performance. The proof is eight-cylinder with beautiful volume 4.3 litres, which can produce (in combination with 6-speed manual and rear drive) maximum power of 380 horse powers (283 kW) and torque 410 Nm. This way, it can make 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Maximum speed is 281 km/h. Agent 007 should be really happy. It’s precise sports car with full comfort and GT attribute in every bit. Philosophy of design is an uncompromising fusion of Aston Martin style and features, that are typical for every extraordinary sports car. DB9 is an art.

Many cars are just bunch of compromises – imposing on paper, but ordinary in reality. A sports car should have character and gain driver’s involvement. It should look great, sound great, it should have enough power to show its spirit and move forward. This is what is Aston Martin DB9 like.

No-one can doubt about the performance potential of this sting. Its V-12 engine with volume 6 liters and 48 valves can produce perfect 480 horse powers (355 kW) at 6000 rpm and torque of 570 Nm. Six-speed manual + rear drive = 4.9 seconds to reach one hundred and maximum speed 300 km/h. Suppose, it’s enough for today…
The quickest road car in Aston Martin’s history. Vehicle, that shelters skillfulness of manufacturers and the higher level of automobile technology. It is a flag ship of this British car company – it’s an ultimate Aston Martin.

It’s purely sporting vehicle, which design indicates that this car is really voluble. Sporting but decent body kit with marks of British singularity is expressive at first sight. 12-cylinder engine with volume 6 liters can proudly produce respectable 520 horse powers (388kW) and 577 Nm of torque. Maximum speed can go over 322 km/h. One hundred is reached in 4.8 seconds. James Bond was lucky. What could intensify the sport potential of this vehicle more than additional modifications? Whatever they are, they should be applied with sense. It would be sin to make this jewel a victim of overcrowding and trumpery. We have to emphasize that this car with its strongly sporting tuning has made a big impression on us. Gratitude to Mansory.

Mansory packet for this vehicle is quite voluminous and starts in exterior. On modified front bumper is placed a 6-row aluminum front grill, which is complemented with an opening, that is covered with 4-row front grill also made of aluminum. The result of this is better flow of air to engine parts. For more expressive design decorative curves at sides of bumper were added. They slightly resemble the shape of openings. Also the front hood was modified – there is now a pair of aluminum grills, or more concretely hood vents. The overall impression of front part is intensified with defiant black body paintwork.

The distinctive side sills are masterpieces of craftsman called Mansory too. Integrated rear openings fitted with perfectly designed lines are sufficient proofs.
Globally, these side sills create very good symbiosis between design and utility, as well as safety. Did you notice, that the word ‘carbon‘ hasn’t been mentioned here yet? Surely, no serious modification of these jewels can be made without this material. Neither this time this “exclusivity“ has been omitted. First signs of carbon can be find on side sills in leather of carbon crossbars, then in beautiful rear mirrors together with their double holders. In combination with black – it’s astonishing.

The big portion of praise desire the rear part of the car. Concretely, we are talking about carbon diffuser, carbon covers of rear headlights and two pairs of chromic exhaust tips placed above each other. Fusion of these single elements to one whole gives the car unique sporting look, which is in addition enriched with predacious noise of these exhaust tips. Moreover, rear lath at the end of the trunk has been added. The trunk obviously improves airflow and subsequently also the overall aerodynamics of the vehicle.

There’s no doubt that the most beautiful part of this modification are the alloy wheels. These are six-spoke alloy wheels with double aluminum spokes painted black, the same as the bodywork. This is unmistakable sign of how seriously this tuning was created. The dimensions of discs are 9x20J in front and 10,5x20J in the rear. The contact with road is secured by low-profile tires with dimensions 255/35/20 in front and 285/30/20 in the rear. When mentioning the performance components of this adjustment, it’s needed to allude luxurious disc brakes Brembo in special edition of Mansory. They are equipped with brake wheels with dimensions 405/32 in front together with six pistons and 405/28 at the back with four pistons. Safety above all. The chassis was lowered by 20 mm, which added something more than only beauty to this car. A kind surprise is hidden under the hood – red carbon can be find in engine housing and spreads of shock-absorbers. The outer modification of this steed cannot be entitled else than brilliant.

Also the interior of the vehicle was affected by skills of company Mansory. However, the style of British work and material remained untouched. Now, the interior is equipped with black leather and dark Alcantara. This combination is supplemented with aluminum (handle of hand-brake and pedals) and, of course, ever-present carbon, which can be find on central console, on sporting wheel, gear shift lever ball, door handles, listels of doorsills with logo of manufacturer.
